61 Titles from The Library of African Cinema Purchased

The IMR Media Library recently purchased 61 titles from California Newsreel’s collection The Library of African Cinema. A special number of their programs were offered at only $24.95 per title so we “stocked up”. The collection arrived a few days and and is in the processing stage. We hope to have them cataloged as soon as possible.

Titles purchased include:

The Media Library is Temporarily Moving to Walker Library

The Media Library, the Music Library, the LRC Univeristy Computer computer lab, and the Graduate Multimedia Development Center (GMDC), currently located in LRC 101, will move temporarily to Walker Library on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Both Libraries, The University Computer Lab, the GMDC, and the LRC 101 B computer classroom will be open to faculty and students until 8pm on December 15.

The LRC University Computer Lab and GMDC will provide continue to provide the discipline specific and specialized software that students and faculty are accustomed to using in LRC 101.

Our temporary locations are:

Media Library – Walker Library Room 262
Computer Lab and GMDC – Walker Library Room 262
Music Library- Walker Library, first floor; Music Librarian and media collection at the circulation desk; scores in the Reference Collection Room.

It’s almost February and we’re pretty much settled in and have things up and running the way they should be. A few minor details are still being worked on but we’re open for business. The computers are set up and running. Both Macs and PCS, just as they were in the LRC. We have new listening/viewing equipment for anyone who has an assignment to look at a video or class. We don’t have any study carrels in our space, but there are plenty around Walker Library, including right outside our room.

If you need to check out anything remember that it may take a few more minutes since our materials are no longer directly behind the circulation desk. We need to take a short walk down the hall and around the corner to retrieve materials. If time is of the essence, just send us an email (imr@mtsu.edu) and we’ll do our best to have the material ready when you come in.

Fri., Dec. 16: closed to patrons, staff available via email/phone

Mon – Fri. Dec. 19 – 23: closed to patrons; staff available via email/phone

Streaming Video Available for Dance, History, Theatre, and Counseling/Therapy Subject Areas

Several electronic resources from Alexander Street Press are now available online for MTSU faculty, staff and students. A Pipeline account is required to access the videos off campus. All are accessible from Voyager. http://voyager.mtsu.edu

A suite of tools—searches and browses powered by Semantic Indexing™ and searchable transcripts synchronized to video—give the ability to drill down in seconds to find the footage of interest from hundreds of hours of video.

1. Counseling and Therapy in Video provides the largest and richest online collection of video available for the study of social work, psychotherapy, psychology, and psychiatric counseling—400 hours and more than 330 videos on completion. The collection’s wealth of video and multiplicity of perspectives allow students and scholars to see, experience, and study counseling in ways never before possible.

The videos in this collection, come from catalogs of Microtraining Associates, Psychotherapy.net, and the University of Manchester Department of Psychiatry.

2. Theatre in Video contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world’s leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video – more than 500 hours in all.

Multiple productions of Shakespeare’s plays will allow for comparative analysis, showing various interpretations of the text and technical and cultural differences among the presentations. The stage work of legendary directors and actors are together for the first time, cross-searchable and available for side-by-side comparison. Interviews with directors, designers, writers and actors, along with excerpts of live performances.

Users can create personal playlists of clips, and also share those clips with other users on the site. There are also editorially selected themed playlists for users to browse.

3. Dance in Video contains over 150 dance productions and documentaries by the most influential performers and companies of the 20th century. Selections cover ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, experimental, and improvisational dance, as well as forerunners of the forms and the pioneers of modern concert dance.

4. American History in Video provides a collection of video available online for the study of American history, with 2,000 hours and more than 5,000 titles on completion. The collection allows students and researchers to analyze historical events, and their presentation over time, through commercial and governmental newsreels, archival footage, public affairs footage, and important documentaries.
